Our Platform
Microbial and animal cell cultures have been used for decades to produce recombinant proteins for industry and health. Each of these systems has its limitations. HBS takes advantage of the unique characteristics of maize grain to overproduce proteins for these applications. For example, proteins not well-suited to traditional single cell expression systems can be produced in maize grain. HBS has licensed issued and pending patents (from Applied Biotechnology Institute) that favor high expression and efficient processing.
Animal-free products
Enables production of proteins difficult to express in single cell cultures such as redox enzymes
Enables applications utilizing direct delivery of maize grain in industrial applications
Low unit cost of production
Low upfront capital costs
Allows for post-translational processing
High accumulation of over 50 proteins demonstrated including: antibodies (including SIgA), industrial enzymes, subunit vaccine candidates (including VLPs), and co-expression of modifying proteins with protein of interest
